The Philadelphia Art Museum is such a great backdrop for a portrait session. There are so many nooks and textures – the steps, the lush grass and hedges, the rocks and flowers, the unusual sculpture, the city, the river… it’s endless. This family session lasted longer than usual because I wanted to get it all. Even walking from the museum back to their house we found great backdrops. That’s what makes shooting in the city so especially fun. Here are some of my favorites from our session.

For as long as I can remember, my husband and I have spent a summer vacation in Dewey Beach, Delaware. First, as a dating couple, then married, now with kids. And always with the same friends. We have our routines–crab night, the boardwalk, happy hour on the beach until dark, photos in the lifeguard stand. The kids love it all, and so do the grown ups. Each year, the kids have become more comfortable in the ocean. Jumping waves, boogie boarding and just sitting on the edge letting the waves move them. That’s what this image is. The best part is the memories they are creating. Also fitting for this month’s quote….

My monthly project theme for June is shallow depth of field, which means a very narrow point of focus. When you want that blurry background, a small f-stop (eg., f2.8) is what you want (also called “shooting wide open”). I have a new macro lens which is ideal for this sort of topic. See for yourself. You can see, especially with the beetle, what’s in focus. It’s about 5 cm. It was nearly impossible to get that exact spot in focus. This was a handheld shot, and breath held!

See how other photographers in the group interpreted the theme. Start with my friend Julie Harding.

I haven’t had much time lately to take photos just for the fun of it, so it’s nice to be part of a monthly project that forces me to do it. I think this may be the first time I’ve been able to participate in this group. The quote for June is a wonderful one from Walt Disney and the photo is my daughter and her best friend at the beach, playing like no one else is around. To see how Deirdre O.
